Artist´s Bio
Biography of Photographer,poet and Filmmaker, Sabrina Guitart. Franco-Spanish photographer, filmmaker and writer. Guitart was born in Paris and grew up between the Mediterranean area of Barcelona and the Pyrenees. At 15 years old, she got her first camera with which she began taking black and white still images. Ten years later, photography became the impulse to explore the movement behind scene and subject. At 20, she arrived in to the U.S.A to study journalism. For the last thirteen years, Sabrina has lived between Portland, Oregon and Barcelona, Spain. For the last several years, she has combined the visual arts with poetic imagery and the spoken word. Travel has been a great inspiration. Inveterate traveller, Sabrina has visited Latin America, Vietnam, India, and has travelled across Europe to Türkiye where she spent some months. Guitart has written articles and taken photographs for bilingual newspapers and magazines in Barcelona and Portland. ‘La Fotografía’, ‘Saltamontes’, ‘ The Hispanic News’ and other publications. In 2000, she travelled with professor Jeffrey Barlow to Vietnam. He is a professor at Pacific University and is one of the eminencies in the United States in Asian Studies. Together they did an hour film, Vietnam Jade of Sorrow`. It is an educational film that presents a journey that shows many of the important historical and religious monuments. The film shows the culture in different areas such as; life and death, traditional arts, and families that have passed on knowledge within martial arts, snake tamers, etc.. The film makes a synthesis between traditional Vietnam and contemporary Vietnam. In her travels to México, she did a reportage on the indigenous people of Oaxaca and Chiapas that focused on one of her deep interests shamanic and traditional healing techniques. She is a traveller and artistic photographer who uses black & white, color and does hand made prints. You can view her photography at: www.sabrinaguitart.blogspot.com Ten years ago, Guitart met “Portland’s Unofficial Poet Laureate Walt Curtis while celebrating the Spanish poets Federico Garcia Lorca and Pablo Neruda. Both performed poetry together and enjoyed the passion of their friendship. Sabrina’s voice, as expressed in Salmon Poet, is an aesthetic aspect of the vitality of the film. Walt Curtis is known for the longest running poetry program on alternative radio. The Talking Earth`is a KBOO.FM classic. Curtis, is the legendary street poet, author of Mala Noche, Gus Van Sant’s first film. Curti’s and Sabrina’s love and connection with the Oregon landscape inspired the artistic-ecological film, Salmon Poet. Sabrina has worked as a camera person and director of photography for other independent films. Her last film project, ‘Strangers in Berlin’, is an experimental short film shot in Berlin, Paris, and edited in the USA. The main element of the film, is an artist’s masterpiece; a sketchbook that a painter, had been working for four years. Her personal diary of genious imagery and writing, becomes like a needle running and sewing destinies of strangers lives and realities. Sabrina continues to build her career as a filmmaker of distinction in Oregon and Spain.
